I wonder if anyone can tell me the operators that Yorkshire Traction took over in the 1950s & 1960s in the Barnsley area.

Part Two of the PSV Circle Fleet History of YTC (covering the years 1961-84) lists
the following:-
1/61....Camplejohn Brothers of Darfield. The purchase included a stage
service from Thurnscoe to Barnsley and 10 vehicles (three Sentinel
buses, an Atkinson bus, an Atkinson coach, two Bedford SBO
coaches, and single coach bodied examples of the Dennis J3 Lancet,
Commer Avenger IV, and Ford 570E Thames Trader). 3/62....Dan Smith of Darfield with a stage licence for
Wombwell-Darfield and three coaches (a Foden PVSC6, a Leyland CPO1
Comet, and a Guy Arab LUF). The Foden and the Comet were not
operated by YTC but the Arab LUF (NDA 14) lasted until 1966 as YTC
fleet number 136. 8/62....Tom Roberts of Barnsley with E&T
licences and a single Tiger Cub coach. 1/64....W Pickerill & Sons of Low Valley with a stage licence from
Wombwell to Darfield (see Dan Smith above) and three coaches (a
late model Commer Avenger I, a Ford 570E, and a Bedford SB5).
Predictably the Avenger I was not used by YTC. 5/65....The stage service (from Higham to Barnsley) of JW Mosley & Sons
of Barugh Green. Mosley continued in business as a coach operator
and no vehicles were included. 10/66...T Burrows & Son of Wombwell's stage carriage assets including
an impressive stage service from the Wombwell area to Barnsley,
Wakefield, and Leeds and 12 vehicles, all double-deck buses.
Burrows continued as a coach operator. 4/67....Robert Taylor & Sons of Cudworth (operating stage services as
part of the "Ideal" syndicate). The "Ideal"
service ran from Upton to Barnsley. Taylor's vehicles were not
included and were sold separately. 10/69...Arthur Rowe & Sons of Cudworth - stage services from the
Cudworth area to Barnsley only. Rowe's last two "stage"
vehicles, both Tiger Cub buses (a Saro bodied example from SDO and
a Willowbrook bodied vehicle from EMMS) were not included in the
deal and Rowe continued as a coach and contract hire operator.
Independents acquired by YTC in the 1970s included
4/74...H Wray & Sons of Hoyle Mill (the other partner in
the "Ideal" syndicate). 5/78...Larratt Pepper & Sons of Thurnscoe Hope this is useful - if anybody out there has Volume One
of the YTC Fleet History perhaps they can fill in the
details for the 1950s acquisitions. Neville Mercer 20/12/11 - 06:56 Thanks Neville for the information Geoff Clayton 21/12/11 - 07:28 Further to the last very comprehensive answer don't forget
that there were also County Motors and Mexborough &
Swinton which were taken over in January and October
1969 respectively. Andrew Comments regarding the above are more than welcome please
