Chapter Twenty One

Extra Journeys

After the end of the Second World War, Hull Corporation started to recommence the issue of timetable booklets, which listed all the service to be operated by the Corporation, and also those of East Yorkshire Motor Services which were co-ordinated with them. Each group of services was listed in the booklets in numerical order, giving the times of leaving both the city and outer terminal points. Where short workings or duplicates were operated, the relevant route numbers were indicated in the timetables, but from 1954, certain services, although listed in the numerical index of services at the front of the booklet, no timings were given in the actual timetable. At the foot of the timetable, however, was a footnote which read, for example, “14B denotes outward journeys to HOTHAM ROAD only”. In later editions the note was amended to read “…extra outward journeys…”, hence the title of this chapter.

The reasons for the existence of these ‘extra journeys’ were varied. They usually were peak hour extras, running in addition to the normal timetabled services. Quite often they were short workings of the main route; and were also used in order to balance the mileages between the two operating partners.

In the period covered by this work there were one hundred and thirty eight ‘extra journeys’ shown in the Corporation’s timetable books. These were contained on twenty seven different Road Service Licences. Some of the journeys retained the status throughout their period of existence, whilst others became timed services, or timed services became ‘extra journeys’ at some point. Very often the ‘extra journey’ status was carried throughout inter-licence transfers, but this was not always the case. Below is a list of the ‘extra journeys’ shown in the timetables between 1954 and 1986. Where the dates given do not represent the whole period of being listed an asterisk (*) is given, in all other cases they were an ‘extra journey’ for the whole of their existence under that particular route number.
